AN INTRODUCTION TO PULSE DETONATION ROCKET ENGINES (PDREs)

An overview of a Pulse Detonation Rocket Engines (PDREs) is presented. PDREs have the potential to significantly reduce the cost and complexity of today's liquid propellant rocket engines. Practical engineering issues and subsystem technologies are being addressed by ASI to ensure that this potential is realized. This paper describes the important components required for a PDRE, presents some fundamental thermodynamic, design, and operational issues associated with the engine, and discusses several past ASI test articles utilized to provide validation of the PDRE concept.
