Measurement of ground-level charge density under a HVDC conductor with presence of fine particles

Space charge density is one of fundamental parameters to evaluate the electromagnetic environment of the high voltage direct current (HVDC) power lines. In this paper, a configuration of a single high-voltage conductor to the ground is utilized to investigate the impact of fine particles on the space charge density. The fine particles are burning incense emissions. The electric field and charge density on the ground level under the HVDC conductor are measured by a field mill and an aspirator-type charge meter respectively in the laboratory. Experimental results demonstrate that under the atmospheric conditions of temperature 20.7°C to 21.0°C and relative humidity 49% to 53%, charge density decreases approximately by 25% when the mass concentration of the incense emissions increases from 9μg·m-3 to 392μg·m-3.
