112.1: Invited Paper: Electrofluidic Imaging Films for Brighter, Faster, and Lower-Cost e-Paper

We report advances in bistable ‘electrofluidic imaging film’ for e-Paper, an approach which transposes colored ink in 10's of ms to the front of, or behind, a porous white film. The electrofluidic imaging film requires no pixel borders or ink-microencapsulation, allowing >90% reflective area. We have demonstrated that this reflective area, coupled with a proprietary engineered reflector, results in RGBW operation that provides SNAP (newsprint) quality color. Furthermore, this new approach is also the first electrowetting-style front-plane technology that can be integrated with simple non-aligned lamination. We have also demonstrated microreplication and other low-cost methods to fabricate the imaging film, and have begun creating sealed matrix-addressed modules using LCD-compatible processes.
