Odor and Air Emissions from Animal Production Systems

The proper measurement of odor, total reduced sulfur (TRS), and ammonia (NH3) from animal production facilities is essential for the development and implementation of improved setback evaluation methods and tools used by state regulatory agencies. This paper summarizes odor, TRS, and NH3 emissions from more than 200 animal buildings and manure storage units on 85 farms in Minnesota. The geometric means of the measured odor emission rates and arithmetic means of the measure TRS and NH3 emission rates are used to represent emission rates from various animal housing systems and manure storage units. Minimum and maximum emission rate values are also reported.
