Positron Emission Tomography and Autoradiographic Studies of Glucose Utilization following Electroconvulsive Seizures in Humans and Rats a

Positron emission tomography (PET) has been used in conjunction with modifications of the 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) method'.' to study local brain glucose metabolism in a variety of human seizure ~yndromes.3.~ It would seem that seizures induced by electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are ideal for PET studies in that they are more uniform from patient to patient than many other types of seizures, and in that their occurrence is controlled. However, ECT seizures have not been studied in detail, perhaps because these advantages bring with them some methodological disadvantages that are not easily overcome.
