An Agenda for Empirical Research in AI and Law

Market for es have fueled a rapid growth in pra ti al systems for legal problem solving. Unfortunately, the AI and Law resear h ommunity has been relatively disengaged from this pro ess. This paper argues that the AI and Law ommunity ould make a larger ontribution to pra ti al legal system development by fo using more on task analysis and empiri al validation to insure that omputational and formal models orrespond to a tual problem-solving behavior. In parti ular, the absen e of task and orpus analysis has led to models of pre edent-based legal reasoning that are in onsistent with a tual problem-solving behavior in the AngloAmeri an legal system.
