‘Madang’ of the Korean traditional house is a mediated space which connects insides and outsides of the house. As a research of examining the meaning and use of Madang, questionnaire survey has been conducted against residents who live in the detached houses as well as literature review covered form Korean traditional houses to its transition by westernization and modernization. The results are as follows. (1) Madang of the Korean traditional house, as empty space surrounded by buildings and walls, is an area of availability and diversity. (2) The meaning of Madang consists of 5 factors such as “a centralized space factor”, “a socialized space factor”, “a remained space factor”, “a leisure space factor” and “a house affair space factor`. The detached house residents consider Madang as a centralized, a socialized, and a leisure space rather than a remained empty space. (3) The use of Madang including naming, floor finishing, activities, and facility uses and requirements shows that the area is not a space for special use, but common use such as gardening and drying a laundry. It is also varied by family member’s age and dwelling size. In conclusion, the meaning of traditional Madang remained continuously in the urban detached house residents’ mind although the area is used for limited activities in relation to the residents’ age and dwelling size.
