How did the article subjects change in the European Journal of Histochemistry during the last 60 years

Abstract Histochemistry provides the unique oppor-tunity to detect single molecules in the veryplace where they exert their structural roles orfunctional activities: this makes it possible tocorrelate structural organization and function, and may be fruitfully exploited in countlessbiomedical research topics. Aiming to estimatethe impact of histochemical articles in the bio-medical field, the last few years citations ofarticles published in a long-established histo-chemical journal have been considered. Thisbrief survey suggests that histochemical jour-nals, especially the ones open to a large spec-trum of research subjects, do represent anirreplaceable source of information not onlyfor cell biologists, microscopists or anatomists, but also for biochemists, molecular biologistsand biotechnologists. Introduction During the last five years, more than 60,000articles have been published where Histochemistry is present as MeSH (MedicalSubject Headings) Term (see,http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/). This apparentlydemonstrates that histochemistry representsa key tool in biomedical research, for a widevariety of topics.Obviously, the strictly histochemicalJournals are the richest source of informationfor all those scientists who regularly usemicroscopy and histochemistry in theirresearch; it is likely that these investigatorsincluded histochemical articles in the refer-ence lists of the papers they have published. In the attempt to estimate the impact of his-tochemical articles in the biomedical field, thelast few years citations of articles published inthe
