OPTIMIZING USE OF RECLAIMED ASPHALT PAVEMENT WITH THE SUPERPAVE SYSTEM

The practice of using Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixes has existed for some time. With the evolution of the Superpave system, a need has arisen for the development of Superpave guidelines for the use of RAP. In this study, rheological properties were measured for different blends of virgin and aged asphalts at various percentages. The result of this study is the development of a criterion for determining the optimum amount of RAP to be added to virgin aggregates and asphalt based on the binder requirements in the Superpave system. However, it is important to remember that other criteria, including mixture properties, aggregate requirements and volumetric requirements, also need to be considered in determining the final amount of RAP to be used in asphalt mixes.
