The synthesis and unequivocal characterization by X-ray crystallography of a Ru-containing polyoxoanion bimetallic inorganic-porphyrin analog is reported, [O[l brace]Ru[sup IV]Cl([alpha][sub 2]-P[sub 2]W[sub 17]O[sub 61])[r brace][sub 2]][sup 16[minus]]. The structural results reveal a new polyoxoanion structural type, a Ru-O-Ru oxo-bridged-dimer anion that is structurally analogous to bimetallic metalloporphyrins containing a [mu]-oxo M-O-M bridge. Such new types of polyanions are of current interest as oxidation-resistant oxidation catalysts and for their possible multielectron redox reactivity. 28 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.
