In IEEE 802.11 WLANs, cooperative communications through high-rate nodes can show enhanced performance than the legacy. For the effective cooperative communications, relay selection and cooperation mechanism are important. In this paper, we propose a cooperative MAC protocol using weighted backoff algorithm to improve throughput in multi-rate WLANs. Candidate relays between the source and the destination determine their own priorities for cooperation by weighted backoff time. So overhead for cooperation can be effectively reduced. In our proposal, selected relay can transmit its data along with source's data. Moreover, network coding is adopted, which reduces the data size transmitted at the relay. We evaluate the throughput of the proposed cooperative MAC protocol through simulations.
