Transport and Social Justice

This chapter begins with a detailed definition of accessibility and how it relates to debates about transport disadvantage and social justice. Accessibility is recognized as an essential requirement for the achievement of social justice, through its contribution to reducing social exclusion. Following the discussion of accessibility, the chapter then considers social exclusion and social justice in turn. The chapter then goes on to look at trends and policy assumptions and how these are being used to inform and develop transport's role in promoting social justice. This discussion looks at the role of public transport and how recent trends in public transport provision have had an impact upon inner city and rural areas.
