Discharge Path Selective Probability of Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire at Different Ground Methods

OPGW(Optical fiber composite overhead ground wire)have been widely used in the AC and DC transmission lines due to its function of shield wire against lightning and fiber optic communications. The unbalanced grounding methods of ground wire, which OPGW is grounding at every towers and ground wire is segment insulated and grounded at one tower, may be responsible for OPGW vulnerability to lightning striking.By simulating lightning,we experimentally researched the discharge path selectivity of OPGW and ground wire under three different grounding methods of grounding at every towers, all insulation to tower, and segment being insulated and grounded at one tower. The experimental results show that the probability of selecting discharge path is the highest in the conditions that wire is grounded at every towers while the lowest is fully insulated wire.In order to reduce the probability of lightning striking OPGW,the grounding methods of OPGW is needed to change or appropriate measures are taken to protect the OPGW.
