WEAR RESISTANCE OF CAST IRON CYLINDER LINER MATERIALS

A research project was undertaken by Det norske Veritas in co-operation with A/S Foss Jernstoperi in order to improve the wear resistance of cast irons for cylinder liners in diesel engines. The project was partially sponsored by the Royal Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (NTNF). It is the object of this paper to describe the method has been used and some of the results. A reciprocating wear test machine has been used for wear testing and the suitability of the method has been tested by comparing results with wear measurements on two test liners service on a ship. A number of liner materials have been tried out in the wear test machine, the majority of them showed 75% higher wear rate than the best materials tested. This points towards the feasibility of conforming the alloy and structural composition of liners to that of the best materials and to apply routine wear tests for production control.
