Ten years of experience at the “La Rance” tidal power plant

Abstract A brief history and description of the scheme are given, describing “one-way” and “two-way” tide cycle utilization, operating results and environmental effects. Technical problems experienced with the operation of electrical and mechanical plant equipment are discussed and also remedial action. Effects on development of large axial “bulb” turbine sets for river operation are described. The conclusion is reached that after a few “teething troubles”, the “La Rance” tidal power plant has performed fully up to expectations.
