Packet data throughput for wireless systems with smart antennas

The uplink packet transmission throughput of a system with a smart antenna configuration at the access point is analyzed. A slotted ALOHA protocol is utilized and the throughput is calculated analytically, assuming idealized antennas. The results are compared to simulations, where diversity combining and interference rejection schemes are investigated as well. The numerical examples agree well with the derived expressions and show that a substantial increase of the system throughput is possible with low mean packet delay.
