Teaching and teacher education : a glimpse into the future

Abstract This study focuses on two questions related to the effect of the ongoing technological developments on the future of teaching and teacher education: (1) ‘What knowledge do teachers need to have?’ and (2) ‘What implications does this have for teaching and teacher education?’ In response to these questions several propositions concerning the need for changes in the perception of pedagogical knowledge, school curricula and school structure are put forward. In parallel, a strategy of ‘core’ and ‘periphery’ aspects in teacher‐education curricula and changes in processes of learning with an emphasis on learning how to learn are proposed.
