Towards an algebra for lighting simulation

This paper presents an algebra and visual interface for managing lighting simulation data. It first discusses previous work on scripting and visual interfaces for lighting research and design. It then identifies advanced spreadsheet like techniques for managing multivariate data both from a computer visualization and domain perspective. LightSketch, a sketch based modeler, is discussed as a tool for creating multidimensional operands for Scythe + Sew. Scythe + Sew, in turn, has a set of built in operators for creating expressions for viewing and manipulating data. Examples of the small algebra are illustrated for lighting research and practice. Future areas are identified for developing the algebra.
