Representing and executing a Medical Guideline using Prova

Patient assessment and finding their critical issues is a crucial aspect of patient care, which is addressed by a medical workflow called the ABCDE approach. However, the ABCDE guidelines are only described in a textual way and hence are not automated. Human errors in practical use might occur, e.g. by persons new into the domain. In this paper, we propose a technical solution to support medical staff during the ABCDE assessment tasks by helping to decide if a patient is critically ill or injured and prioritize particular treatments for better and faster therapy. The solution is built upon a set of semantic rules and automated using the rule-engine “Prova”.
