Symmetric Plane Frameworks of Least Weight

The problem of designing the lightest framework which will safely equilibrate a system of given forces was first considered methodically by Michell [1]. He obtained sufficient conditions, which are now known to be also necessary, for frameworks to be of least weight and illustrated his results with some interesting examples. If the material is assumed to be homogeneous then least weight design is equivalent to least volume design.
