DID ANCIENT IDENTITY DEPEND ON ETHNICITY? A PRELIMINARY PROBE

Abstract:To what degree did ancient peoples base their distinctive identities upon ethnicity, i.e., descent, lineage, ancestry, and kinship? This article questions the significance of ethnicity in that sense as a prime marker of group self-consciousness. It argues for a diversity of meanings for ethnic terminology and a complex combination of plural identities in ancient self-perception.
