Stimulating a Car-Free Recovery

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank most likely will be asked to increase lending by federal governments trying to avert a recession. Recession proofing the global economy will involve government spending of hundreds of billions of dollars in "stimulus" funds. Such spending could create more sustainable and equitable cities if spent wisely. Conversely, if misused, it could help speed the planet toward climate change's breaking point and lock it into long-term dependence on oil and private automobile use. The author examines stimulus spending plans by countries including China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, and the United States. Projects include reducing dependence on private automobile use through accessible transit.
