Design space representation of channel members for industrial applications

The paper presents cost effective design and fabrication procedures for channel members under general loading conditions. These procedures are appropriate for industrial implementation to maximize the structural performance. The analysis methodology and structural idealization are first presented. Guidelines are then provided for steel fabricators to achieve economical sections to be used in practice. A design space concept is then introduced showing interaction of serviceability and strength limit states. Industrial applications are then presented to illustrate effective strategies for the engineers to tackle common design challenges encountered in practice. The paper offers to practitioners and steel fabricators procedures that can be used to optimize the channel size under this general loading combination
