The assessment of software reliability

Abstract This paper is concerned with actual and potential uses of statistical methods in the assessment of software reliability. The aim is to provide a statistical audience with an understanding of the issues involved, and to generate interest in some of the current outstanding problems. The paper identifies reasons for software reliability assessment, outlines why special methods are needed to deal with the software aspect of systems, and discusses the role of statistics.
