Application of quadrature mirror filtering to the coding of monochrome and color images

In this paper an efficient method for subband coding of color images is presented. The basic approach is to transfer an RGB picture into YIQ components where each component is decomposed separately into several narrow bands. The higher band signals corresponding to the Y component are retained and coded separately, while the higher bands associated with I, and Q components are discarded. Furthermore, the low band signals are coded using a DPCM coding scheme. Our simulation results show that, by using such a coding scheme, good quality pictures can be reconstructed at low transmission rates.
