Chemical Control of Breathing in Early Life a

This review is mainly concerned with breathing responses to changing levels of oxygenation and acidosis (C02/pH). Emphasis is given to the major changes in chemical environment during the perinatal period and the effects that these and the concomitant central nervous system (CNS) development have on the integration of the chemical drives to breathe. Attention is drawn to the important interaction of breathing responses with other effects of chemostimulation on cardiac, CNS, and metabolic function. To facilitate understanding of the changes during development, current concepts of mature chemoreceptor physiology are briefly reviewed.
