Independent Hand Gesture Recognition in HandTalker

HandTalker is a system we designed for enhanced user interface which allows user to communicate with computers or through computer network with others by hand gesture. One of the application cases of HandTalker is to help deaf people to “see” everyday news and to talk with other people. HandTalker consists of three parts: learner, recognizer, and synthesizer. In the recognizer, NN is applied for independent element recognition and HMM is applied for continuous gesture flow recognition. This paper describes our works on design and implementation for the part of independent hand gesture recognition in HandTalker.
