CASE REUSE BY MODEL-BASED INTERPRETATION

For applying case-basedreasoning to design, adaptation and combination are essential. They require adaptation knowledge defining the parts of a case that can be changed without compromising its function. We have investigated model-based interpretations for providing this knowledge. An interpretation is a functional model given by the user to explain the structure given by a case. It defines the intended functions and provides constraints on the structure which avoid violating them. Since the interpretation may be different from that used in the design of the case, creative reuse of cases is also possible. This paper reports on the results of this investigation with two case-based design programs: FAMING for mechanism part shapes and CADRE for buildings.
