Introduction: Machine vision research at Osaka University

This special issue presents recent works from Osaka University. There is a long and strong history of vision research at Osaka. Since the early 1970s a wide range of computer vision research has been conducted, including the development of image processing hardware for pattern matching and dynamic scene analysis; the design and implementation of a range finder based on structured lighting; and the recent work on mobile robot vision systems with special image acquisition techniques. The Osaka faculty currently involved in computer vision are: Saburo Tsuji, Masakazu Imai, Gang Xu, Hiroshi Ishiguro, Seiji Inokuchi, Kosuke Sato, and Hirokazu Kato at the Department of Systems Engineering; Masahiko Yachida, and Yasushi Yagi at the Department of Information and Computer Science; Tadahiro Kitahashi, Seiichiro Dan, and Shougie He at the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research; Shin-ichi Tamura and Yoshinobu Sato at the Medical School; and Yoshiaki Shirai and Minoru Asada at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Computer Controlled Machinery.
