IJF-OQPSK modulation schemes with MLSE receivers for portable/mobile communications

A receiver structure for constant enveloped IJF-OQPSK modulation under fading channel conditions is introduced. Its performance in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels was analyzed and verified by computer simulations. Results show the relation between the performance of the system and the memory introduced by the double-interval overlapping pulse shape. By properly using this memory, it is possible to achieve superior performance compared to conventional schemes. Even though no coding has been used, comparable results to coded schemes was obtained with no extra redundancy. Therefore, the complexity caused by multilevel modulation can be avoided, and transmission of signals with compact spectrum and good performance is possible. The constant envelope, compact spectrum, superior performance in fading channels and low complexity make the hardlimited IJF-OQPSK scheme a good choice for portable/mobile communications, to achieve low cost, small size, and high power and bandwidth efficiencies.<<ETX>>
