Uso da terra na Amazônia e as mudanças climáticas globais

Uso da terra e mudanças de uso da terra na Amazônia afetam as mudanças climáticas globais de várias maneiras. O efeito estufa recebe contribuições de gases tais como gás carbônico (CO2), metano (CH4) e oxido nitroso (N2O) quando a floresta é desmatada, tanto pela queimada quanto pela decomposição da biomassa que não queima. O “uso da terra”, ou seja, a continuação de um uso da terra sem ter uma mudança do tipo de uso, também pode causar fluxos de gases, por exemplo, pela exploração madeireira na floresta, pelo manejo das pastagens, e pelas queimadas recorrentes das savanas amazônicas.
