New Techniques for Modelling and Control of Flexible Automated Manufacturing Systems

Abstract We consider the problem of optimizing the performance of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS). These advanced automated systems are becoming popular throughout the world for parts-manufacturing. However, the ability to analyze and optimize the performance of FMS has remained relatively primitive. This paper describes our recent efforts in modelling and control of FMS. First we motivate the need for analytical models of FMS. The main body of the paper then states our new results on analytical models of FMS. Next we show our models can be used for optimal feedback control of FMS. Based on an analytical approach, our techniques have given much better results than previously proposed heuristics. Our methods and results show the scope for achieving still better results, and it is hoped that this paper will stimulate further research in this area.
