Syllables and segments in speech production

Speech error data are used to investigate the role in speech production of phonological segments such as syllables, phones, and syllable-constituents. It is argued that the construction of articulatory programs involves the accessing of a library of articulatory routines. These routines correspond to syllables, while their addresses in the library are expressed in a form analogous to classical phonemic representation. The instructions employed in accessing the library involve the transfer of phonological information from the lexicon. This transfer takes place syllable-constituent by syllableconstituent. It is shown how this model accounts for a variety of speech errors.
