Future challenges in chemical engineering research : Chemical Reaction Engineering

We focus on four areas in which significant progress is occurring or expected. The first one is concerned with solids technology and formulation engineering, the second one with the problem of selectivity and the need for local control of processes, for instance through smart fluid dynamics. The third area is that of novel equipment design and the emergence of microprocesses and microtechnology. Finally, we briefly discuss issues stemming from the development of Computational Chemical Engineering: new frontiers for mathematical modelling, namely transient and chaotic phenomena and molecular processes, but also the risk of going too far into virtual reality
