MIDAS — high speed automatic surface inspection of steel billets

Abstract The development of an automatic inspection machine for detecting surface flaws on square steel billets is outlined. Known as MIDAS (Marketing and Identification of Defects by Automatic Scanning), the machine uses an eddy current technique, and is capable of inspecting billets on-line at speeds of 36 m/min and temperatures in excess of 150° C.
