Doing the right thing

In this paper we take issue with two recent analyses proposed for extraposition : Analyses based on Kayne's (1984) Linear Correspondence Axiom (Kayne 1994 ; Zwart 1992, 1994) and the strictly right branching analysis of Haider (1993). We compare these to the traditional rightward movement analysis, a particular version of wich we present. It turns out that only the rightward movement account can explain the relevant data in German, including extraction from embedded clauses, coreference with and binding of elements in embedded clauses, restrictions on the distribution of embedded clauses, and constituency facts around topicalization
