Entrepreneurial Science in the Academy: A Case of the Transformation of Norms

This paper discusses the transformation of the research university from an institution devoted to research and teaching to one devoted to economic development as well. It also treats the effects of the transformation of the professorial role from that of individual researcher to head of a research group with entrepreneurial and managerial responsibilities for sustaining and coordinating the activities of several graduate students, post-docs, and technicians. A case study of a liberal arts university in the process of transition is presented. The phenomenon of academic capitalization of knowledge is analyzed as an instance of normative change, rather than normlessness, since organizational changes within the university and federal government policies encourage if not mandate this shift in the direction of science.
