Contrary to the classical ideal average models, the introduced average model includes the non-linear effects of the power semiconductor devices. This paper shows an averaged representation of the PWM switch in multilevel converters takes into account semiconductor state characteristics. The proposed non-ideal PWM-switch model is a useful method for modeling pulse width modulated converters operating in the continuous conduction mode. The developed nonlinear average model is used in determining the dissipated power and junction temperature. Unlike the circuit model (fine model), the proposed method has less CPU-cost. It can be applied to three levels Neutral-Point-Clamped inverter (NPC). © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.
