Modelling of Batch Process Operations

This chapter deals with the aspects of modelling and simulation of batch operations and presents two case studies. In the first case study, a detailed step-by-step procedure to develop a model for the study of batch crystallization operations is presented, then a model is developed and analyzed using this procedure, and finally solved for a specific chemical system (sucrose crystallization). The modelling of a batch-cooling crystallization process using the population balance approach is highlighted through the use of a systematic model generation procedure. It uses a generic model-based framework through which models for specific batch-cooling crystallization operations are generated for various modelling objectives. The main idea here is that through a sequence of steps, the necessary model equations of different types, forms, and complexity are retrieved from a library of models available in the framework. In the second case study, an example of events modelling is provided through the multiple running of a batch distillation operation. Using an available dynamic model for a process, an event modelling feature is added to evaluate the multiple operations associated with batch distillation.
