Impact Characteristics Estimation of Channel Section Short Column under Axial Impact Load

Short columns of channel section with fixed ends are subjected to impact loading by dropping weight and the axial impact features are thoroughly studied. Impact experiments are conducted on various length channel section short column of A5052 aluminum alloy with a various width of section flange. The experiments are conducted with various dropping weight and height for each specimen length and flange width. The results indicate that channel section column have intrinsic relations between deformation and load on each section configure although dropping mass effects the relations. A handy model is proposed to be able to estimate roughly maximum deformation and time duration by using only information of kinetic energy and weight mass. The handy model shows possibility to utilize numerical simulations with explicit transient finite element method with efficiently and precisely utilizing much lower degrees-of-freedom in full-scale structure crash simulation.
