A report on the international conference on cutting tool materials

A two and a half day International Conference on Cutting Tool Materials was held on September 15 to 17, 1980, in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Some 200 participants from various countries including Japan, United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Canada and Israel attended. The conference was sponsored by the American Society for Metals, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Iron and Steel Institute of Japan and the International Institution for Production Engineering Research. Frank Gorsler of General Electric Company was the Conference Chairman. Two dozen papers were presented on such topics as materials availability, properties and wear of cutting tool materials, carbides, high-speed steel, cermets, diamond, cubic boron nitride, quality control and applications of cutting tool materials. The complete conference program is listed below. In the following, a brief summary is presented of some of the major issues and discussions during the conference.
