DEFT: Progress on Direct Electronic Fourier Transforms of Two-Dimensional Images.

Abstract : This report covers research on Direct Electronic Fourier Transforms of Images (DEFT). Progress was made along both theoretical and experimental avenues. The theoretical effort enabled us to identify alternatives in creating fully electronic two-dimensional transform imaging through the use of acoustically controlled light valves. Other activities included development of an automatic focusing application, the study of sampling techniques as they apply to DEFT cameras, and the development of 'Acoustic Computers' to provide automatic compensation for the frequency-dependent characteristics of the devices. Experimental work focused on improved sensors achieved by improving several aspects of sample construction. An elastobirefringent light valve for one-dimensional reconstruction was also built and tested.
