Resonant mechanisms in the vibrational excitation of ground state O2.

We present new experimental and theoretical results for {ital e}{sup {minus}}-O{sub 2} collisions which demonstrate the dominant contribution of the {sup 4}{Sigma}{sub {ital u}}{sup {minus}} resonance and the significant contribution of the {sup 2}{Sigma}{sub {ital u}}{sup {minus}} resonance to the {ital X}{sup 3}{Sigma}{sub {ital g}}{sup {minus}} ground state vibrational excitation cross sections in the energy range 4{endash}15eV.This work, combined with earlier studies by the present and other workers, shows that low-energy vibrationally and electronically inelastic cross sections can be quantitatively understood in terms of four resonances with {sup 2}{Pi}{sub {ital g}}, {sup 2}{Pi}{sub {ital u}}, {sup 4}{Sigma}{sub {ital u}}{sup {minus}}, and {sup 2}{Sigma}{sub {ital u}}{sup {minus}} symmetries. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
