In this paper, we present a novel high-gain wide-band dipole antenna for application in a wireless local-area network (WLAN) access point in the 5-GHz band. With proper dimensions chosen for microstrip-line, the proposed antenna can have an enhanced antenna-gain level over a large operating bandwidth covering the 5.2/5.8-GHz bands. This enhanced-gain characteristic is very attractive for practical applications, since it is usually necessary that the antenna gain for frequencies across the 5-GHz band be increased in order to provide a larger operating range for WLAN operations. Details of the proposed antenna design are described, and the experimental results of a constructed prototype suitable for 5-GHz WLAN operation are also demonstrated.
