Conclusions1.The traditional principles of joining concrete dams to rock foundations based on only the concept of shear without consideration of the possibility of other forms of deformation and failure of the foundation do not ensure complete reliability of the structure and sometimes lead to a negative effect.2.When designing dams it is necessary to examine both shear along weakened surfaces and rotation with rupture of the rock under the upstream face and crushing of the rock foundation (concrete) in the region of the downstream face and on the basis of the results of these calculation to designate measures for joining gravity and buttress dams to the rock foundations.
