Annotating the Interaction between Focus and Modality: the case of exclusive particles

We discuss in this paper a proposal to integrate the annotation of contexts with focussensitive expressions (namely the Portuguese exclusive adverb so ‘only’) in a modality scheme. We describe some properties of contexts involving both exclusive particles and modal triggers and discuss how to integrate this with an existing annotation scheme implemented for European Portuguese. We present the results of the application of this annotation scheme to a sample of 100 sentences.
