A flow induced system with dry friction

Abstract A flow induced system, consisting of an elastically mounted body with a pendulum attached, was analysed by Tondl and Nabergoj [A. Tondl and R. Nabergoj, Non-periodic and chaotic vibrations in a flow induced system, Chaos, Solitons & Fractals 4, 2193–2202 (1994)]. Here, a system with dry friction acting on the body is considered. It is proved that the trivial solution is stable and that the semi-trivial solution (non-oscillating pendulum) is unstable in the whole range of the flow velocity. The non-trivial solution (both body and pendulum are oscillating) exists only above a certain threshold. The analytical solutions are compared with the results of numerical investigation. Vibration records are complemented by mapping diagrams.
