Coplanar non-resonant elements for multiband operation

The great demand of multifunction wireless devices or smartphones capable of providing large number of functionalities forces the antenna engineers to develop miniature antennas able to operate in multiple communication standards. In addition, the device thickness is continuously shrinking, thus forcing the need of developing low height structures. This paper proposes the integration of two coplanar non-resonant elements capable of solving size and height limitations. The solution is integrated in a ground plane having typical smartphone dimensions of 120 mm × 50 mm and attains hepta-band operation covering eight communication standards (GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS, LTE2100, LTE2300, and LTE2500) by means of two non-resonant elements featured by reduced dimensions of just 6 mm × 6 mm. The paper further extends the proposal to a radiating system capable of providing nona-band operation for covering ten communication standards by integrating two additional non-resonant elements of reduced dimensions, 6 mm × 12 mm and 3 mm × 3 mm, intended for providing operation in two additional communication standards, namely LTE700 and GPS.
