Sir, Commoner et al. (1987) cite a paper of ours which appeared in Environmental Science & Technology (Müller & Buser 1986). We feel, that their interpretation of our work is incorrect. Commoner et al. (1987) conclude that PCDD/PCDF emissions from wasteburning incinerators are a major contributor to environmental levels of these compounds. In their considerations on the relative importance of PCDD/PCDF emissions from automobile exhaust and of municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration, they cite our paper on halogenated aromatic compounds in automotive emissions from leaded
