Development of a seamless information environment: information network using ISDN

Abstract This article discusses a Japanese experience to develop a “seamless information environment” based upon a broadband ISDN. Our artificial intelligence (AI) research is now refocussing its efforts in light of the rapid development of broadband networks. The high-speed network makes it possible for us to conduct better AI research, and AI can contribute towards the development of a more efficient and effective use of this high-speed network. This study discusses these current research trends in an attempt to create a “seamless” information environment where families, research centers and the INTERNET are more easily interconnected. A three dimensional framework organizes the important research trends and their requirements: 1) a common seamles resource; 2) seamless communications; and 3) groupware. This article concludes with a brief description of future research issues and proposed several approaches for dealing with these issues.
